Volunteer Opportunities with Spitfire

Join our Events Committee!

Each year, Spitfire Club offers quarterly free community events to raise awareness about our work, spread the joy of reading, and bring our various audiences together around our shared passion for girls’ empowerment.

These events are super fun and critical to our work, but Spitfire's staff team is really small -- we need help!

Events include:

  • February 8 - Galentine’s Day Brunch: Spitfire’s annual signature event celebrating the power of female friendship

  • June 8 - Women in Art Showcase: An interactive gallery experience to showcase our girls’ end-of-year projects from our nonfiction unit exploring Women in Art

  • August 3 - Spitfire Camp Kickoff: Relive the nostalgia of summer camp magic at our first day of camp party! Spitfires and their families, volunteers, supporters, and media representatives are all invited to join our camp carnival

  • September 8 - Back to School Bash: A picnic to celebrate International Literacy Day and the start of a new school year in Spitfire style

We ask that Events Committee members plan to volunteer at least two of these events, though they may participate in planning and promoting all of them. Please email amanda@thespitfireclub.org to learn more and express interest!

Small Group Mentoring for '25-'26 School Year

Our mentors dedicate 90 minutes each week to read, play, and bond with their small group of 3-4 Spitfires during their weekly after-school Spitfire Club. Spitfire Club meeting times vary by site, but occur during after-school hours. Though we understand that life happens, we ask that Mentors commit to consistently attending their scheduled Spitfire Clubs, as their absence impacts their girls and the overall atmosphere of our clubs.

December 2025 Update: we only have two mentor positions left available. Both commitments take place weekly on Tuesdays from 5-6pm in Alexandria's Arlandria neighborhood. If you are interested, please email mentor@thespitfireclub.org to learn more!

Key details on our Small Group Mentoring Program:

  • At this time, all mentoring sites are located in Alexandria, Virginia

  • Our Spitfires are in elementary school and our cohorts are organized into two groups - 1st-3rd grades and 4th & 5th grades

  • The mentoring program begins in October and runs through Memorial Day on days when ACPS is in session. We ask that mentors commit to mentoring for the entirety of the school year

  • Mentors have the option to renew their commitment in subsequent years; we prioritize pairing mentees with their previous mentors whenever possible!

  • Cohorts meet at a set time and day of each week (e.g., Wednesdays from 2:30 - 4pm at Cora Kelly Elementary)

  • Spitfire Clubs are led by Spitfire Club staff -- mentors are not expected to facilitate Spitfire Clubs or be responsible for planning and preparation (though we do share our lesson plans with our mentors so that they are aware of what we'll be doing together each week)

All volunteer mentors participate in mandatory training on "the Spitfire way", mentorship best-practices, positive social-emotional development, reading support, and cultural competence.

The Spitfire Club is excited to announce the return of our Spitfire Day Camp! August 3rd - 7th from 8:30am - 4:30pm, Spitfire Club staff and volunteer mentors will lead our Spitfires through an unforgettable week of playing, reading, learning, and growing in a special girls' empowerment summer camp experience in Alexandria, Virginia.

Spitfire Camp seeks volunteers for a variety of roles, including:

  • Small group leaders (full week and full day commitment) -- open to youth only

  • Activity and operations volunteers (flexibile - part-time, full week/full day, and/or select days commitment) -- open to youth and adults

Camp volunteers should plan to attend a mandatory training the afternoon of July 26th or the evening of July 27th. The training is in-person, but alternative arrangements can be made if you are only able to attend remotely.

Once you express interest in this opportunity, a member of our team will reach out with next steps. Thank you!

**All adult volunteers must be willing to undergo a background check to verify that they are eligible to work with children, and volunteers of all ages must be able to provide references**
